True Blood Finale: Death Comes Knocking (Video)

Note: Spoilers if you haven’t seen Sunday’s Season 4 finale episode, “And When I die.”

HBO got out the body bags in its Season 4 True Blood finale by dispensing several characters and leaving us to wonder if even more will actually make it past next season’s premiere episode when the series returns.

Say a definite goodbye to Jesus (Kevin Alejandro), Nan (Jessica Tuck) and once again Marnie (Fiona Shaw). And since we never know if someone is done until we see it with our own eyes (and sometimes not even then), prepare yourself for the possibility that Tara (Rutina Wesley), Jason (Ryan Kwanten), and Sam (Sam Trammell) may be goners as well.

On the finale, we find ourselves on Halloween night. Wiccans believe that the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest that evening. That opens the door to Marnie taking over Lafayette’s body, killing Jesus while she steals his brujo power, and capturing Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgard).

When Tara realizes that Jesus is dead, she takes all recent events into account and speedily decides Marnie is back. She ventures with Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Holly (Lauren Bowles) to Bill’s mansion and finds the two vamps there tied to the stake, waiting for Marnie to execute them by fire. After calling upon all their dead family, friends, and loved ones for help, Sookie’s gran and the witch Antonia are able to persuade Marnie to give up on her revenge and cross over into the next world. And the witch saga is finally over.

But, it’s the aftermath of that event that asks the pertinent question of the characters left behind: If you don’t want to die, how do you want to live?

With freedom? Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) desires Jason for the taking, and doesn’t want a serious relationship. But, is she just fooling herself into believing she can’t overcome her vampire nature for true love? Then’s there’s Sookie’s decision not to accept either Bill or Eric’s love. She believes the decision is best for all involved. But is one really alive if they’re turning their backs on the people who truly love them? What kind of life is that?

With vengeance? What brings the Fellowship of the Sun’s Steve Newlin (Michael McMillin) – who’s now a vampire – to Jason’s doorstep? That was unexpected, but maybe it should have been. The actor did tell The Hollywood Reporter at Comic-Con that, “Steve Newlin has weaseled his way into every season so far, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed for Season 4; he’s still at large — large and in charge.”

Meanwhile, we already knew that Russell Edgington wouldn’t be the one returning this season, but Alcide’s men discovered that his grave had been dug up and he’s missing. So, it’s inevitable that he’ll turn up, as well. Then there’s Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten). Has her anger at Eric and jealousy of Sookie driven her to free Russell to restore the balance?

With regrets? Lafayette has to decide to live on with the guilt that whether it’s his fault or not, his lover died at his hands. And now, he may have the death of Tara to contend with as well. At the same time, how much of Tara’s death will Sookie take on as her burden?

With complications? Sam has laid Tommy to rest and wants to continue a life with Luna (Janina Gavankar), but will love win over the constant threat of death from their enemies? And does Alcide (Joe Manganiello) really want someone who is in love with two other men?
