Riad Matham Hotel Review, Marrakech, Morocco

Simplicity is the watchword at this riad, where owner Thierry has stripped back all unnecessary fuss to reveal the elegant architecture of this one-time merchant’s house. Rooms revolve around a pleasingly symmetrical, palm-planted patio centred on an octagonal pool. Underfoot warm terracotta tiles soak up the sun’s heat, their earthy tones echoed in the tall cedar wood doors, window frames and handmade furniture.

The simplicity continues in the two large salons with their low banked seating, shin-high tables and woven Touareg mats made from dwarf palms. This minimalist take lets the architecture sing: tall lancet arches draw the eye upwards to the magnificent roof terrace with its 360 degree views over the medina.
